![]() ![]() … Sting performed a moving rendition of “Fields of Gold” last week in Los Angeles at the memorial service for A&M Records’ beloved Gil Friesen. But “Wild Thing” remains their one off monster, sort of like “96 Tears,” “Louie Louie,” or “Build Me Up Buttercup.” In the UK, the Troggs were huge, and even played at Sting and Trudie Styler‘s wedding, where everyone joined in on “Wild Thing.” Reg Presley will be missed… The group had a couple of other hits including “Love is All Around,” which was covered more recently by Wet Wet Wet. Their hit “Wild Thing” is one of the great treasures of international pop music. But he also made an impact outside of music and is likely the only rock singer to have extensively researched crop circles and UFOs, culminating in his 2002 book about the paranormal, “Wild Things They Don’t Tell Us.” He is surely the only rock singer to have devised and patented (in 1973) a fog warning system for airports that is still used today.Reg Presley, 71, the man who made “Wild Thing”–you make my heart sing–famous–has died in the U.K. ![]() ![]() ![]() He also created a template for unintentional rock ‘n’ roll comedy with his profane, but highly comical, commentary during a recording session that later was released as “The Troggs Tapes.” It is believed by some fans to have inspired, at least in part, the fictional band Spinal Tap of “This is Spinal Tap” “mockumentary” film fame.Ī lifelong road dog, Presley continued his music career until December, when he was diagnosed with cancer while on a concert tour of Germany. Presley (real name: Reginald Maurice Ball) sang with lots of attitude, if little technical command, creating an inadvertent template for the punk-rock revolution that followed in the 1970s. ![]()
